How the Adoption Cost Calculator Works
Start from one of three presets — budget, typical, or premium — then edit every line. One-time costs cover adoption, carrier, litter boxes, scratching post, bowls, the first vet visit, microchip, starter toys, and bed. Monthly costs cover food, litter, medication, insurance, treats, grooming, and a buffer for surprises.
The results show the one-time total, the first month, the full first year, the average month, and a five-year outlook (one-time costs plus monthly costs times sixty, with no inflation baked in).
Why use editable estimates?
Cat costs depend on where you live, the cat you adopt, and the care you choose. Start with a scenario, then replace every number with quotes and prices that fit your household.
For explanations of the expense categories and longer-term planning context, read the cost of owning a cat guide. The guide owns the informational topic; this page is the interactive worksheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the preset prices accurate for where I live?
They are starting points, not quotes. Replace every figure with prices from your local shelter, veterinarian, and pet store — that is exactly what the editable fields are for.
What does the five-year number include?
Your one-time setup costs plus sixty months of your monthly total. It does not include inflation or unexpected emergencies — the monthly buffer line exists so you can plan for the unexpected.
Does the calculator include pet insurance?
Yes, as an editable monthly line. The budget preset leaves it at zero while the typical and premium presets include it. Whether insurance pays off depends on your cat and your risk tolerance — run the numbers both ways.
Can I use this if I'm buying from a breeder instead of adopting?
Yes. Put the purchase price in the adoption line and adjust the vet line, since breeder kittens may need vaccinations and spay/neuter scheduled separately. The rest of the worksheet works the same.
