History & Origins
CFA’s breed page does not give me a kitten named Prune or a year I can print. I am not going to invent a Toronto kitchen. What CFA will stand behind is the cat: medium, warm, sweet-tempered, lively, amenable to handling, and still allowed to outcross to American Shorthair, Devon Rex, and domestic shorthair until Sphynx born on or after December 31, 2033 may have only Sphynx parents. Coated Sphynx are registered for breeding only.
That outcross window is why two kittens in the same cattery can look like cousins of different breeds. An American Shorthair head on a “Sphynx” is a paperwork question. A Devon wave on a fuzzy body is another. Ask the generation. Ask what happens after 2033 in that program.
Color and pattern are all over the map. CFA: all colors and patterns in any combination found in felines. Sun intensifies color. White lockets and belly spots are allowed. You are not shopping a pointed class. You are shopping skin.
They are not a Devon Rex with a close shave. CFA penalizes a cat that resembles Devon, Cornish, or Oriental body types. Different pages.
Personality & Temperament
Friendly, energetic, curious, affectionate. CFA: curious, outgoing, very intelligent, anything but shy. They communicate needs — usually attention or food — very clearly, with a stream of steady chatter while they follow you. Not necessarily loud. Not quiet. Needy is CFA’s word, and they say it is not everyone’s tea. People who respond get devoted companionship that is hard to duplicate.
Body-heat magnets. Hours glued to your side. Popular with children if the children are old enough to understand that the skin is delicate and not suited to rough play. They thrive on other cats, especially other Sphynx, and do not do well left alone for long. A pair is a real option. Two oil-producing cats is two baths. Two is not a heater you can ignore.
A week in the house: morning on your chest, a sweater if the air is wrong, a bath on the calendar, an evening of play, a second warm body if you leave. They will sit on the laptop. You are still the warmest object. Plan for that.

Physical Characteristics
CFA: appearance of hairlessness, some hair on the bridge of the nose and the ears. Short fine hair may be on feet, outer ear edges, tail, scrotum. Remainder of the body from bare to peach-like fuzz whose length does not interfere with the look of hairlessness. Skin texture creates resistance when stroking. Wrinkles desirable around muzzle, between ears, around shoulders. Whiskers usually absent; if present, short and sparse.
Head a modified wedge, slightly longer than wide, prominent cheekbones, whisker break, squared muzzle. Ears large to very large, broad at the base, open, upright, interior naturally without furnishing. Eyes large, lemon-shaped, wide-open center, definite points on each side, set wide. All eye colors accepted, harmonious with skin color.
Body medium length, hard, muscular, broad rounded chest, full round abdomen, well-rounded rump. Back line rises behind the shoulders for longer back legs. Medium boning. Surprisingly heavy for the size. Females generally smaller. I am not printing a fake pound range. Pick them up. The weight is the tell.
Paw pads thick — the appearance of walking on cushions. Tail slender, whip-like, tapering. Disqualify: kinked tail, folded or curled ears, short legs, extra toes, aggressive behavior that endangers a judge.
Sunburn is anatomy. Indoor climate control is husbandry. A sweater is not a costume if the house is cold. It is a coat you provide because they do not grow one.
Care Requirements
Grooming
High care is oil, ears, and teeth. Fur is not there to absorb sebum. Grease on furniture and a smell in the week are the unbathed version of this breed. Use a product your veterinarian is willing to put on cat skin. I will not invent a shampoo brand or a weekly commandment that fits every cat. Some need more. Some need less. Look at the skin. Redness, crust, an odor that is not “just Sphynx” — veterinarian.
Ears without furnishings collect wax. CFA names periodontal disease. Large ears and a naked face do not make dental work optional. Nails still grow. Wrinkles still trap dirt.
They are not a wash-and-wear cat. If you wanted low coat work, a Russian Blue is a different page.
Feeding

A round abdomen is in the standard. Fat is still fat. The lack of coat will not hide a middle the way a Siberian will. You will see it.
Sensitive digestion is on CFA’s future list. A food change that turns the litter box into a project is a veterinarian, not a blog recipe.
Exercise & Enrichment
Lively. Play until they are tired. They will still want your lap after, because you are warm. Vertical space they can climb. A second Sphynx if the house empties. Climate they can sleep in without shivering.
A cold garage “cat room” is the wrong room. If you cannot keep the house in a range you would sit in without a sweater, this is the wrong skin.
Chatter is the soundtrack. CFA says not necessarily loud and not quiet. You will hear them before you see them if they want dinner or a lap. A Sphynx who never talks in the cattery and never leaves the towel may still be a Sphynx. Meet them after they have warmed up. The glued-to-your-side hour is the product. Urticaria pigmentosa is a CFA skin word I will not diagnose. Red bumps, crust, a cat who licks raw — veterinarian, not a different shampoo you guessed. Kitten respiratory trouble from no hair is husbandry: drafts, cold floors, a ride in an unheated car. Periodontal disease is why you look at the teeth while you are already looking at the wrinkles. High care is several small jobs, not one dramatic bath. Plan them.
Health Concerns
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is on the profile and on CFA’s future page. Cornell’s cardiomyopathy page is the general library. Breeders who scan breeding cats are doing the job. Ask for the echo, not a shrug. Breathing hard, hiding, a cat who will not play — veterinarian.
Hereditary myopathy is on the profile. Muscle function. CFA names it. Weakness, an odd gait, trouble with stairs — do not wait for a blog to name a drug. I will not.
CFA also names respiratory issues in kittens due to lack of hair, sensitive digestive systems, urticaria pigmentosa, and periodontal disease. Kitten lungs in a draft are husbandry. Skin that looks like a rash is a veterinarian, not a bath you skip. Teeth are the same as any cat, except you can see more of the problem.

Is a Sphynx Right for You?
This breed fits people who want a heat-seeking, talkative, high-touch cat and will wash skin, warm the house, and ask about hearts and muscle. Households that can keep a pair. People who understood “hairless” as a care increase.
Who should pick a different cat: you, if you wanted an allergy workaround. You, if you wanted low maintenance. You, if a night shift plus one cat in a cool apartment is the whole plan. You, if children are too young to keep fingernails off wrinkles. You, if you needed a quiet cat. You, if a Devon rex coat was the actual want.
Apartments work if they are warm and you are home. First cat: possible if you will bathe and play; worse than a Domestic Shorthair if you needed easy. Allergies: visit. Hairlessness is not hypoallergenic.
Finding a Sphynx
A serious breeder talks HCM scans, myopathy, the 2033 outcross cutoff in their program, and lets you feel the skin. Ask to see an adult after a normal week, not just after a bath. Ask who they sleep on. Ask what the ears look like.
Rescue gets Sphynx mixes and the occasional registered adult. An adult whose oil you can smell is better information than a filtered photo.
Red flags: sold as hypoallergenic, no heart talk, kittens at six weeks, a cold garage, a Devon sold as a cheap Sphynx, a razor as a breed.
Adopting vs. Buying from a Breeder still applies.
Sit with the adult until they choose your lap for heat. If they never come closer, believe them. If they glue to your side in ten minutes, that is the cat. Then decide whether you will wash that skin in February.
Peach fuzz is still hair. Bare is still oil. CFA wants evidence of hair on the nose and ears so you know you are not looking at a shaved anything. Whiskers may be missing. That is the standard, not an injury. Wrinkles around the muzzle and shoulders are desirable in the ring and dirt traps in a house. Look in the folds after a week, not after a bath for your visit.
The 2033 date is not trivia. Until then, American Shorthair, Devon Rex, and domestic shorthair outcrosses are legal in CFA. After that, Sphynx-born cats need Sphynx parents. Ask where that program is on the calendar. A coated Sphynx is for breeding only. If someone is selling you a fuzzy kitten as a cheaper pet Sphynx, ask what “coated” means on the registration.
Heat is the other half of high care. A sweater is not a joke in a cold house. A sunny window without shade is a burn. Children who love the look and cannot keep nails off wrinkles are the wrong household, and CFA already wrote that age line. A pair helps the alone problem and doubles the oil. Plan the bath, the climate, and the second cat as one decision, not three surprises.
