American Shorthair Cat Breed Guide: Personality & Care

An American Shorthair is a strongly built, well-balanced working cat whose job used to be rodents and whose job now is not turning into a sofa. The profile on this site lists them as gentle, affectionate, and playful, short coat, low care, 15–20 years, with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and obesity on the health line. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s version is power, endurance, agility, a silent meow, and a future paragraph that says HCM has largely disappeared from the breed with testing. Those last two sentences can both sit here. If you wanted a mixed short coat with no standard, that is the Domestic Shorthair. If you wanted round and British, that is the British Shorthair.

History & Origins

CFA: a true breed of working cat. Conformation adapted for that work, no part of the anatomy so exaggerated as to foster weakness. Strongly built, well balanced, symmetrical, power, endurance, agility. That is the history I can print from the standard. I am not going to invent a Mayflower passenger list. I am not going to invent a 1966 rename I did not open on a CFA page this session.

They are not a random Domestic Shorthair. DSH is mixed. This URL is a closed class. Silver tabby is the postcard and not the only color. CFA puts points on coat and on tabby pattern. If the seller is showing you eighty colors of barn cat and calling them all American, you are shopping a look.

They are not a British Shorthair. Different head, different coat spring, different mature clock. Scottish Fold programs outcross to American Shorthair in this country. That does not make a Fold an American. Different ear, different mutation.

Personality & Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, playful. CFA: affectionate, appreciates human company, particularly enjoys interactive play, independent enough to amuse itself while owners are away at work. High intelligence. Trainable: stay off counters, use a post, retrieve. Also capable of opening cupboard drawers and sometimes doors, especially where the treats live.

Easygoing and relatively sedate. They love to play, especially hunting games with feathers and wands. If you play at the same time each day, do not be surprised to find them dancing in anticipation. Tolerant of other animals and small children. Skilled at communicating without loud vocalizations. Silent meow of greeting: open mouth, no sound, politely requesting attention.

A week in the house: morning stretch, a person who will throw the wand at the usual hour, a window, an afternoon of self-amusement that is not an open pantry, an evening of real play so dinner does not become a sofa. If you needed a Siamese conversation, this is the wrong quiet. If you needed a cat who cannot be left for a workday, this is closer to honest than a Devon.

They spread attention around more than a Siamese will, and they still want the wand at the hour you taught them. Independent on the CFA page means they will not melt if you go to work. It does not mean a closed bedroom and a bowl. A cat who opens the treat drawer is intelligent, not “fine alone with snacks.” Close the drawer. Play when you get home. That is the whole personality in three sentences.

A silent meow is a greeting, not a mute cat. You will still hear a comment at the door. You will not get a Siamese speech. If the adult in the room is screaming, you may have an individual, not a breed failure. Sit with them. A quiet kitten in a carrier is not data.

Dogs and other cats: CFA says tolerant. An adult still gets a slow introduction. A working hunter and a small mammal in a cage is a different conversation. I will not invent a guaranteed pack animal.

Physical Characteristics

CFA: medium to large. No sacrifice of quality for size. Females may be less massive. Slightly longer than tall. Viewed from the side, body in three equal parts. Tail length equal to shoulder blades to base of tail. I am not printing a fake pound range. Meet the adult.

Head large, full-cheeked, oblong just slightly longer than wide, sweet open expression. Ears medium, slightly rounded tips. Eyes large and wide, upper lid like half an almond, lower lid fully rounded, bright, clear, alert. Nose medium, same width entire length. Muzzle squared. Definite jowls in mature males. Jaws strong enough to grasp prey. Chin firm. Neck muscular.

Body solid, powerful, muscular, well-developed shoulders and chest and hindquarters. Back broad, straight, level. Legs medium, heavily muscled, straight and parallel. This is a cat who could still do the job. A delicate, tubular body is the wrong class.

Coat short and dense. Weather is why. I will not invent a shedding calendar. A rubber brush still helps. They still need nails, ears, and teeth.

Care Requirements

Grooming

Low care is the coat. Dense still sheds. Weekly is the usual, more in the dump. They stay cleaner than a Persian because there is less coat to hold yesterday’s dinner. That is not zero work.

Feeding

Obesity is on the profile. CFA did not name it on the future page. A working body plus a snack house is still a cat who cannot jump. Use How Much Should I Feed My Cat?. Weigh them. No invented cups. Treats in a cupboard they can open are a puzzle you will lose.

Exercise & Enrichment

The dancing-at-playtime sentence is the care. A regular wand appointment. Hunting games. A post. Closed cupboards. Twenty minutes of nothing and an open kibble bag is how a 15–20-year lifespan gets shorter in the middle.

A laser they never catch is a frustration toy. A wand they can kill is the hunting game CFA named. A sturdy tree they can land on is better than a wobbly condo. They are power, not aerialists. If the only exercise is walking to the bowl, the dense coat will hide the result until the jump fails.

Write the play hour on a real calendar. CFA’s dancing sentence only works if the hour exists. Skip it for a week and you have a bored working cat. Skip it for a year and you have the obesity line.

Health Concerns

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is on the profile. CFA’s future page says it was noted in some cats in the 1980s and 90s and has largely disappeared thanks to preventive testing and selective breeding. Obesity is on the profile. It is not a gene you DNA-test. It is the bowl. Diabetes and joints follow weight in every cat. I will not invent a hip-dysplasia claim. It is not on the profile and not on the CFA page I opened.

Two calendars. Heart scans on a schedule a cardiologist names, even if CFA’s future page is cheerful. Weight on a kitchen scale every month. Do not collapse them into “they’re healthy.” A cheerful brochure and a cat who cannot jump can live in the same house.

Is an American Shorthair Right for You?

This breed fits people who want a sturdy, quiet-greeting, family-tolerant cat and will play on a schedule so the working body stays a working body. Households that leave for work and come back to play. First-time owners who wanted easy coat, not zero time.

Who should pick a different cat: you, if you wanted a mixed DSH and thought papers were optional decoration. You, if you wanted a British brick. You, if you needed opera. You, if free-feeding was the plan. You, if you needed a Velcro cat who cannot be left.

Apartments work if you play. Allergies: still a cat; visit.

Finding an American Shorthair

A serious breeder shows you type — squared muzzle, working body, no exaggeration — and talks hearts even if CFA’s future page is cheerful. Ask to see the silent meow. Ask what they do with the cupboard. Ask who they play with at the usual hour.

Rescue gets ASH mixes and the occasional registered adult. An adult whose waist you can feel is better information than a kitten photo.

Red flags: “it’s just a DSH with papers,” no heart talk, kittens at six weeks, a British sold as an American because it is grey, an open buffet in the cattery.

Adopting vs. Buying from a Breeder still applies.

Meet the adult walking, playing, and not begging from an open bag. If they never come closer, they may still be an American — independent is in the standard. If they open the drawer while you talk, that is also the cat. Then decide.

Silver tabby is the postcard. It is not a requirement. A solid, a classic, a mackerel — CFA has classes. Type first. Color second. A pretty pattern on a tubular body is a different conversation.

The 15–20-year line on our profile is a long time to feed a hunting cat like a sofa. Write the play hour on the calendar the way CFA wrote the dancing. Skip it for a month and the obesity line is not theoretical.

Working cat does not mean outdoor cat. Indoor is still the safer husbandry. A window and a wand are how the prey drive stays legal. A door left open “because they’re American” is how you lose a cat who can open the other door too.

Squared muzzle, three equal parts, no exaggeration. That is the visit. Sit through a play session at the usual hour. If they never dance, you may have an individual who is not that cat, or a house that never taught the hour. If they open a cupboard while you talk, believe the intelligence line. Close the cupboard before you sign.

Silver tabby is the postcard and a trap. People buy the pattern and skip the waist. Feel the ribs. A pretty classic pattern on a sofa body is still the obesity line. Color classes exist. Type first.

CFA’s silent meow is easy to miss on a first visit if the room is loud. Watch the mouth. Ask the breeder to show you the greeting they mean. A mute cat is a different conversation. A cat who never uses their voice and also never plays is not “easy.” It may be a cat who has shut down.

Independent enough while you work is the gift. Come home. The dancing is the test that you did. A kitchen scale is part of the breed. So is a closed treat drawer. Write both down. They will still be here at fifteen if you do not turn the working body into a couch. The 15–20-year line is the reason the bowl matters now, not later.

A mixed silver tabby in a shelter can be a wonderful cat. It is still a Domestic Shorthair until papers and type say otherwise. Do not pay a breed price for a look. Do not skip the look because a paper exists. Both.

Scottish Fold programs use this breed as an outcross in this country. That does not make your Fold kitten an American, and it does not make an American’s ears a Fold project. Different mutation, different page. If a seller is mixing the two in one litter as if they were one class, leave.

Stay long enough to see them walk, sit, and ignore a lap. Independent is allowed. Then throw the wand. If nothing happens, believe that too. Then decide.
