Siamese Cat Breed Guide: Personality & Care
A Siamese is a svelte, wedge-headed, blue-eyed pointed cat whose job is to talk to you and sit on the warmest thing in the house, which is probably you. The profile on this site lists them as vocal, social, intelligent, and playful, short coat, low care, 12–15 years, with amyloidosis and asthma on the health line. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s version is one of the 1906 foundation breeds, four championship colors only, PRA testing, and amyloidosis you have to ask about in the lines. If you wanted 150 colors, that is the Oriental Shorthair. If you wanted a moderate mink, that is the Tonkinese. If you wanted a plume, that is the Balinese.

History & Origins
CFA treats them as a foundation breed from 1906. Temple and royal stories exist; I am not going to certify a legend CFA does not pin down on the breed page. They arrived in the West as pointed, talking cats and stayed that way. The modern CFA standard is the long wedge, large ears, tubular body, whip tail. “Applehead” or traditional is a pet-market word for a rounder old-style cat. It is not a CFA championship class. If you wanted that look, say so. Do not buy a wedge and then complain it is extreme.
I am not inventing pound ranges or cup amounts. Svelte is the standard. Fat is a DQ in spirit — CFA says not fat. Weigh them.
Colorpoint Shorthair is the CFA door for red, cream, lynx, and tortie-point cats of this body type. People call those Siamese in conversation. Papers do not. If championship class matters to you, ask the association’s name for the color. If it does not, you still need to know what you bought so you do not argue with a registrar later.
CFA championship colors: seal, chocolate, blue, lilac. That is the whole list. An Oriental pointed kitten is paperwork, not a discount Siamese. Outcrosses: none.
They are not a Snowshoe. White feet and a facial V are a different pattern lottery.
Personality & Temperament
Vocal, social, intelligent, playful. CFA: experts at making desires known, clingy, they love you because you are warm, they want to be with you, on you, or in whatever you are doing, loud protests if you need space. Best companion is often a human or another Siamese. Many make friends with other pets.
A week in the house: morning commentary, a person to follow, a warm lap, a window, an evening of fetch, a second social being if you work long days. If you wanted a mute Chartreux, this is the wrong blue eye. If you work twelve-hour nights, this is a harder cat than the short coat suggests.
Kids: people-centered helps. Large ears are not handles. Best Cat Breeds for Families with Kids is the family-fit owner. Supervise. An adult still owns the house.
Intelligence here means they learn the cabinet and your schedule. It does not mean they will amuse themselves until 10 p.m. A bored Siamese invents a job: the bread, the other cat, 5 a.m. opera. CFA’s clingy paragraph is the care level. The coat was the easy part.
A second Siamese is the usual serious recommendation because CFA says the best companion is often a human or another Siamese. Two voices is a real noise. Sit with two adults before you decide that is better than one.
Heat-seeking is not a personality disorder. They will find the laptop, the radiator, your neck. Give them a legal warm spot. You are still it.

Physical Characteristics
CFA: medium, svelte, long tapering lines, lithe and muscular, not bony, not flabby, not fat. Head a long tapering wedge that makes a triangle from nose to ear tips. Ears strikingly large. Eyes almond, slanted, uncrossed, deep vivid blue. Body tubular. Tail long, thin, tapered. Coat short, fine, glossy, close.
Disqualifies include mouth breathing, visible kink, eyes other than blue, white toes, longhair, crossed eyes as a problem for the ideal. I am not judging your pet. I am saying crossed eyes are not “the Siamese look” you should be shopping.
Points darken with age. Contrast must remain. Seal is deep brown points on pale fawn. Chocolate is ivory and milk-chocolate. Blue is cold bluish white and blue points. Lilac is glacial white and frosty grey-pink. That is the menu.
A chocolate who looks seal in a dim hallway is a lighting problem or a mis-color. Ask to see them in daylight. Lilac is not blue. People mix those two constantly. The paw pads and nose leather are part of the color call. I am not judging your pet. I am saying championship color is four doors, not a rainbow.
White toes DQ. Longhair DQ. Eyes other than blue DQ. Visible kink DQ. Mouth breathing DQ. The last one is health. The first ones are class. Crossed eyes are not the souvenir you take home from a temple story.

Care Requirements
Grooming
Low care. Rubber brush. They still shed. Large ears collect wax. Nails, teeth. A satin coat that looks greasy is a cat who has not been touched.
Feeding
A svelte, active, people-oriented cat in a snack house gets a pot belly. Use How Much Should I Feed My Cat?. Weigh them. No invented cups. Unusual thirst, yellow gums, or a cat who stops eating is a veterinarian — amyloidosis is on the health line; I will not invent a diet that prevents it.
Exercise & Enrichment
A job. Fetch. Height. A person. CFA already told you they will protest solitude. A second Siamese is a real option. Two vocal cats in an empty studio is still an empty studio. A laser they never catch is ankles at 5 a.m.
Clicker tricks work because they want to be in the game. That is not a substitute for a person. A puzzle feeder buys you a shower, not a workday. If the job is ten hours away from home, get two Siamese only if someone is still coming back to be the warm object.
They darken with age. A pale-bodied kitten is not a failed seal. Wait for contrast before you argue color with a breeder.
Health Concerns
CFA: PRA and amyloidosis.
PRA: recessive, can cause blindness, genetic test exists. Ask for tests.
Amyloidosis: liver, research ongoing for genes, ask whether relatives developed it. A “we don’t see that” with no records is not a test.
Our profile: asthma. Cornell describes feline asthma; some studies have suggested Siamese may be predisposed; Cornell says that is not proven. Coughing, open-mouth breathing, hunched posture — veterinarian the same week. I will not prescribe an inhaler.
I will not dump dental disease onto every Siamese without a named study the way Persian has JAVMA 2018. Teeth still matter. Look.
Asthma management is a veterinarian plus the household air. Smoke, aerosols, dusty litter — Cornell talks environment on the asthma page. I will not invent a litter brand. If they cough, they do not “have a Siamese hairball personality.” They have a cough.
PRA is the test you can actually put on a table. Amyloidosis is the relative you have to ask about. Those are different kinds of honesty. Demand both.
Is a Siamese Right for You?
This breed fits people who want a talking, lap-adjacent, four-color wedge and will be home enough to feed the need. Households that like conversation.
Who should pick a different cat: you, if you wanted quiet. You, if you wanted an Oriental paint box. You, if you wanted red point and thought CFA Siamese included it. You, if a studio plus a night shift is the whole plan. You, if large ears on a toddler’s height make you nervous and you will not supervise.
Apartments work if you play and the neighbors can live with the voice. A well-built apartment with a person in it works. An empty one with a wedge in it does not. First cat: loud, educational. Allergies: still a cat; visit. Short coat still sheds. The voice is not an allergen and it is not optional.
A Tonkinese is the moderate if the extreme wedge and the siren both sounded like too much. Read that page before you split the difference in your head and buy a Siamese anyway.
Finding a Siamese
A serious breeder talks PRA tests and amyloidosis in the lines, shows you the four colors they actually keep, and can explain Colorpoint versus Siamese without getting angry. Ask to hear the cat. A silent Siamese in a cage for ten minutes is a sales technique.
Rescue gets pointed mixes. Meet the individual. A wedge and papers are a Siamese. A loud pointed DSH is a mixed cat you can still love.
Red flags: red point sold as CFA Siamese championship, no PRA talk, crossed eyes sold as type, kittens at six weeks. A silent hour in the cattery is not a silent cat at 6 a.m. in your apartment.
Adopting vs. Buying from a Breeder still applies.
Four colors. That sentence saves money and arguments. Seal, chocolate, blue, lilac. Everything else in CFA pointed-land is another breed or another division. An Oriental in seal point is still an Oriental with paperwork. A Colorpoint in red is a Colorpoint. If the seller blurs those words, they are selling a pointed cat, which you might still want. Pay pointed-cat money, not Siamese-championship money.
Cling is not optional. CFA wrote the loud protest when you want space. A second Siamese helps some households and does not replace you. If you cannot be home, this is the wrong wedge.
PRA tests exist. Amyloidosis is still an inquire-the-lines conversation. Asthma is still a Cornell-maybe for the breed and a same-week veterinarian if they cannot breathe. Those three sentences are the health page. I will not add a dental study I do not have.
Applehead is a look some people prefer. It is not the CFA standard. If you want it, find someone who breeds it on purpose and does not pretend the wedge is a defect. If you want the standard, look at the triangle from nose to ear tips and the uncrossed almond eye.
Warmth-seeking is CFA’s joke that is anatomy. They will sit on the laptop. Give them a bed in the sun. You are still the warmest object. Plan for that. Sit with an adult for an hour before you sign. The voice in minute five is not the voice at 5 a.m. If you cannot live with both, this is the wrong four colors. The hour in the cattery is cheaper than a year of 5 a.m. regret. The voice is the product. Buy the adult talking, not the kitten sleeping. Dawn is the test. If they are quiet at dawn, you still bought a talker. Count on it. Keep the laptop closed if you need it.
