A Turkish Angora is a fine-boned, single-coated cat of angles and straight lines, famous in white and not limited to it. The profile on this site lists them as intelligent, affectionate, playful, and social, medium, long coat, medium care, 12–18 years, with deafness in white cats and ataxia on the health line. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s version is a head with no profile break, all colors equal, chocolate and lilac and pointed disqualified as hybridization, and a health paragraph that names white-cat deafness — especially blue-eyed — and tells you to breed white to colored. Those last two sentences can both sit here. If you wanted a swimmer with a colored head and a white body, that is the Turkish Van. If you wanted a mat factory and a smash face, that is the Persian.

History & Origins

CFA’s breed page is the source I will use. I am not going to invent an Ankara Zoo program or a 1973 championship date I did not open on that page this session. Turkey is the origin. The cat is the angles.

They are not a Turkish Van. Van is the swimming, piebald idea. Angora is the fine single coat. A seller who says “Turkish cats all swim” is shopping a country, not a standard.

They are not a Persian. No stop. No break. CFA disqualifies a profile stop or break. A smashed white longhair is the wrong class even if it is pretty.

White is the postcard. CFA: all colors equal. Chocolate, lilac, pointed: disqualified as hybridization colors. A pointed kitten called Angora is a different conversation.

Personality & Temperament

Intelligent, affectionate, playful, social. CFA: interactive, greets you at the door, independent enough while people work. That is a people cat who can also amuse himself, not a Van in a bathtub and not a Persian on a pillow.

A week in the house: morning at the door, a window, an afternoon of self-amusement that still wants an evening, play that has to happen because intelligent is on the list. If you wanted a cat who cannot be left, this is closer to honest than a Devon. If you wanted a sofa ornament, this is the wrong fine bone.

Deafness in a white cat changes the house. You still play. You just do not sneak up. A hearing cat and a deaf cat in one litter is possible. Ask.

Physical Characteristics

CFA: angles and straight lines. No profile break. Stop or break disqualifies. I am not printing a fake pound range. Fine-boned is the class. Pick them up. A cobby white longhair may still be lovely. It may not be an Angora.

Eyes: white cats may be odd-eyed, blue, or gold. Blue-eyed white is the deafness conversation, not a disqualification by itself. Meet the adult.

Grooming

Medium care is the coat. Single is not none. Comb a few times a week, more if they tangle. They stay easier than a Persian because there is no undercoat factory. White still needs a look. Nails, ears, teeth still exist.

Feeding

Exercise & Enrichment

The door-greeter sentence is the care. Interactive play. A person who comes home. Independent enough while you work is not twelve hours of a closed bedroom. Wand, climbing, a window. Twenty minutes of nothing is how a 12–18-year lifespan gets bored in the middle.

A wand they can catch is better than a laser. Fine-boned is not fragile as a lifestyle, and it is not a reason to skip play. If the only exercise is walking to the bowl, the single coat will still hide a middle. Weigh them. A deaf cat still plays. You just do not sneak up with the wand from behind as a joke.

Health Concerns

Deafness in white cats is on the profile. CFA: not known for specific health problems except that, especially blue-eyed whites; breed white to colored; BAER in some places. Ask for the test. A kitten who does not startle at a noise behind them is information. Do not shout as a personality test.

Ataxia is on the profile. Watch them walk. A wobbly adult is a veterinary conversation, not a cute trot. Ask the breeder what they have seen.

BAER is a test, not a vibe. White-to-colored is a pairing, not a rumor. Ataxia is a walk you watch. Those three are the visit for this breed. A breeder who only wants to talk how white the kitten photographs is selling a postcard.

Is a Turkish Angora Right for You?

This breed fits people who wanted a fine, interactive longhair and will comb a single coat. Households that like a door greeter. People who will do hearing work if they pick white.

Who should pick a different cat: you, if you wanted a Van and thought all Turkish cats swim. You, if you wanted a Persian face. You, if you thought white was required. You, if a deaf cat in the house was off the table and you were still shopping blue-eyed white without a test. You, if a sofa cat was the plan.

Apartments work if you play. Allergies: still a longhair; visit. A door greeter in a studio is a gift until the wand lives in a drawer. Put the wand where they can see you pick it up.

A first Angora is a reasonable adult whose walk you have watched and whose hearing you have not guessed. A kitten on a red blanket is a guess about both. I would rather meet the mother at the door than buy a cloud.

Finding a Turkish Angora

A serious breeder shows you the straight profile, talks white-to-colored, and can say BAER without shrinking. Ask about ataxia. Ask to see an adult walk. Ask which colors they actually keep. Clap once behind a white adult, then stop. The test is information. The rest of the visit is still the cat.

Rescue gets white longhairs who may or may not be Angoras. An adult whose hearing you have tested is better information than a kitten photo on a red blanket. A colored adult with a straight profile is better information than a white kitten with a stop. Type first. Hearing second. Color third. Then decide. A stop in the nose is still a stop even on a pretty white cat.

Red flags: “they love water like Vans,” championship in 1973 as a fact I will not print, no hearing talk on a white litter, a stop in the nose as a feature, pointed kittens as Angora, kittens at six weeks.

Adopting vs. Buying from a Breeder still applies.

Meet the adult walking, greeting, and startling — or not startling, honestly. If they never come to the door, they may still be an Angora having a day. If they cannot walk a straight line, that is a different conversation. Then decide.

White is famous. Color is equal. A black Angora is still the breed. A pointed one is the hybridization DQ.
